I discovered my passion to teach reading while completing my undergraduate teaching program at Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL in 2002. In 2008, I began teaching Reading at Round Lake Area Schools in Round Lake Beach, IL where I completed my Master's in Literacy Education as well as my state licensing as a Reading Specialist.
After completing my tenure year at RLAS, I relocated to Orange County, CA, where I began offering my literacy services privately as a licensed Reading Specialist cleared in both California and Hawaii. I also became trained in The Orton-Gillingham Approach, which is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia.
I have had the pleasure of helping all types of learners meet their academic goals, be accepted to their choice schools, and develop vital literacy strategies across grade levels. I also have extensive consulting experience, which has afforded me the honor of assisting parents, teachers, and other professionals with diagnostic reading assessments, case reports, and IEP meetings.
From 2017-2020, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach adults as an adjunct Reading professor at Long Beach Community College. I taught reading courses, led workshops, and tutored in the Writing and Reading Success Center.
In 2018, I published my first children's book, An Elephant's Story, and created a humane education initiative that helps animals and the environment, called Angel of the Animals.
In 2019, I completed my training as a grant writer, which has equipped me with unique skills that assist my clients and high school students in finding their best match colleges, completing a competitive application packet, and receiving possible scholarship and grant offers.
I am passionate about helping all types of learners and instilling in them the confidence and skills they need to follow their dreams. As a member of the International Literacy Association and the International Dyslexia Association, I always stay up-to-date with best practices in the field and use research-based methods, such as balanced literacy and the Orton-Gillingham approach for students with reading disabilities. I look forward to speaking with you about how I might be able to help!
